The PCs would take the role of an Elite Recon unit in the Alliance military, scouting newly-opened Mass Relays, making contact with known and unknown alien species to seek their support, gathering intel on Citadel actions, and maintaining counter espionage missions against the feared Specters. In secret, they have even begun opening unmapped Mass Relays, though they know the Council would declare outright war if they knew (so far, it's a mounting Cold War nobody is willing to trigger).

Not stopping there, humanity is courting the Volus (with offers of having a full vote in all Alliance decisions), and making some overatures towards other races, as well. In return, those species joined the Systems Alliance. They found planets that could be terraformed for the Quarians, and promised the Krogan they would pour research efforts into curing the Genophage. As a result, humanity withdrew from the Citadel, but instead of turning inward like the Batarians did, started trying to form its own coalition. In this scenario, the Council ruled in favor of the Batarian instead of humanity.

* A Rival Camp: Delving slightly in alternate history, we get my favorite idea thus far.

They might sometimes need to use stealth to sneak past locals (paranoid corporate groups, protective Hanar, or residents of the Terminus Systems), but could also often co-operate with Citadel groups, and new discoveries could fuel all kinds of interesting plot developments and cool PC powers. * Raiders Of The Lost Monolith: For a more specific goal and more "good" protagonists, the PCs might be a group of archaeologists (and the hired help and muscle of same) finding and exploring Prothean ruins around the galaxy.

Either way, this opens up a whole new range of adventures, though it sacrifices anything approaching the clout and respect from the console games, as well as the return to "old school" Sci-Fi feel of working for the Big Organization. Wrex points out that anyone (even an Asari Commando) can become a mercenary. For a slight variant, the PCs might be an elite mercenary company. Mass Effect shows quite clearly that the criminal world is far less segregated than the military worl, and anyone can end up there. * You Can't Take The Sky From Me: The PCs are pirates, outcasts, or other undesireable elements of society. what do you do? Here I'll list some of my ideas, and hopefully other people will chime in with different ideas, or refinements on the ideas of those who posted before them. This creates a slight problem in that Bioware does a great job constructing their worlds to revolve around the actions of the player character, so there are relatively few possibilities for a group with diversity and clout comparable to Shepard's team. Alright, then, once you have chosen a system, what would you do with the setting? Personally, I hate just retelling the source material in an adapted RPG, or even coming too close - no Reapers or Specter PCs for me.

There are, to put it mildly, several threads on RPG.net dealing with what system to use for running a tabletop Mass Effect game.
